# Compute limitations and roadmap

> Review what the Compute preview doesn't support yet and where to follow what Datum is building next.

Compute is in preview and still being built. This page lists what it doesn't support yet. For quota and fixed limits, see [Limits and quotas](https://datum.net/docs/compute/limits-and-quotas.md).

> [!NOTE]
>
> Compute is in preview, and the `v1alpha` API can change.

## Limitations

The Compute preview has the following limitations. For limitations of each [runtime class](https://datum.net/docs/compute/runtimes/overview), see [Run a container image](https://datum.net/docs/compute/runtimes/general-compute.md#limitations) and [Build and deploy a unikernel](https://datum.net/docs/compute/runtimes/unikernels.md#limitations). For limitations of the ALB, see [Publish a workload](https://datum.net/docs/compute/compute-and-alb.md#limitations).

### Runtime and sizing

* One instance type is available, and you can't set CPU or memory for each container.
* Persistent disks, raw devices, GPUs, and custom virtual machine images aren't available. Files written at runtime are lost when Datum replaces an Instance.
* Instances with more than one container aren't supported. Run one container per workload.
* Health probes, such as readiness and liveness checks, aren't available. An Instance is ready when its containers are running.
* You can't suspend, resume, or snapshot Instances. You can open a shell or run a command in a running `general-purpose` Instance; see [Instance shell sessions](https://datum.net/docs/compute/instance-shell.md).
* A workload's runtime class and network can't change after you create it.

### Placement and scaling

* Compute runs in `us-central-1` (Dallas), `us-east-1` (Ashburn), and `us-west-1` (San Jose).
* Workloads don't scale automatically, and they can't scale to zero. Don't set `scaleSettings.maxReplicas` or `scaleSettings.metrics`.
* Rollouts replace Instances one at a time in each location, with no option to add extra Instances during the rollout.

### Networking

* During the preview, Instances have private IPv6 addresses only. Private IPv4 addresses and public IP addresses are a preview limitation.
* Private DNS names for Instances are on the [roadmap](https://datum.net/docs/galactic-vpc/limitations-and-roadmap.md#planned-capabilities).
* Firewall rules to filter traffic between Instances on a network are on the [roadmap](https://datum.net/docs/galactic-vpc/limitations-and-roadmap.md#planned-capabilities).
* Public access is HTTP and HTTPS only, served through Datum's [ALB](https://datum.net/docs/alb/overview.md). Raw TCP and UDP exposure is a preview limitation.

For more information about networking, see [gVPC limitations and roadmap](https://datum.net/docs/galactic-vpc/limitations-and-roadmap.md). To learn which networking capabilities Datum is working on, see [Planned capabilities](https://datum.net/docs/galactic-vpc/limitations-and-roadmap.md#planned-capabilities).

### Operations

* Read Instance output and ALB access logs in the [Cloud Portal](https://cloud.datum.net) or with [`datumctl compute logs`](https://datum.net/docs/datumctl/compute/viewing-logs).
* Compute publishes per-Instance CPU and memory measurements. See [Observability](https://datum.net/docs/compute/observability.md#metrics) for the metric names and queries.

## Roadmap

Networking capabilities for Compute Instances, such as private DNS and firewall rules, are tracked in [gVPC planned capabilities](https://datum.net/docs/galactic-vpc/limitations-and-roadmap.md#planned-capabilities). For the overall Datum roadmap, see [Platform roadmap](https://datum.net/docs/platform/roadmap.md).

> [!NOTE]

> Plans can change. This list isn't a commitment to deliver any feature or to meet any timeline.

## What's next

* To check quota and fixed limits, see [Limits and quotas](https://datum.net/docs/compute/limits-and-quotas.md).
* To fix common problems, see [Troubleshooting](https://datum.net/docs/compute/troubleshooting.md).
