# DNS limitations and roadmap

> Review what Datum Domains and DNS don't support yet and where to follow what comes next.

Domains and DNS are still being built. This page lists known limitations and where Datum is headed.

## Limitations

* **DNSSEC isn't supported.** Zones hosted on Datum aren't signed. Turn DNSSEC off at your registrar before you move a domain to Datum. See [DNSSEC](https://datum.net/docs/domain-dns/dns.md#dnssec).
* **No DNS query metrics yet.** Datum doesn't publish metrics about the queries it answers, such as query volume or response codes. To check that a zone is live, see [Observability](https://datum.net/docs/domain-dns/observability.md).
* **A zone's domain name can't change.** To use a different domain, create a new zone.
* **One zone for each domain.** A domain can belong to only one zone on Datum.
* **`ALIAS` isn't portable.** `ALIAS` isn't a standard record type, so a zone file exported from Datum can't carry it to another provider. See [ALIAS](https://datum.net/docs/domain-dns/dns.md#alias-/-cname-flattening).
* **The DNS API is `v1alpha1`.** Field names in `DNSZone` and `DNSRecordSet` can change between releases. The `datumctl dns` plugin keeps up with those changes for you.

## Roadmap

Datum acquired CloudValid and is open sourcing its domain validation technology. Datum is building it into Domains and DNS, including:

* **Simpler domain verification**, built into every step from adding a domain to serving traffic on it.
* **Domain registration**, from search to a working, verified domain.
* **Custom domains for SaaS platforms**, combining domains, certificates, and the [Application Load Balancer](https://datum.net/docs/alb/overview.md) for platforms that serve their customers' domains.
* **Email authentication**, making it easier to publish the SPF, DKIM, and DMARC records that inbox providers now require.

To learn more, see [Why we're open sourcing domain validation](https://www.datum.net/blog/open-sourcing-domain-validation/). For what Datum is building across the platform, see the [Platform roadmap](https://datum.net/docs/platform/roadmap.md).
