# Recover your account

> Get back into your Datum Cloud account when you can't use your passkey, by setting up a new passkey from a recovery email.

If you can't use your passkey, for example because you lost or reset the device it was on, you can recover your account from your email. Recovery adds a new passkey on the device you choose. Your other passkeys stay on your account until you remove them.

## Recover your account

To recover your account, follow these steps:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the recovery page">
    In your browser, go to [https://auth.datum.net/id/recover](https://auth.datum.net/id/recover).

    You also reach this page from **Recover your account** on the sign up screen when your address already has an account, and on the **No sign-in method available** screen.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Request a recovery link">
    On **Recover your account**, enter your email address and click **Send recovery link**.

    If an account exists for that address, Datum sends you an email with a recovery link and a code. The **Check your email** screen stays open in your browser.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the link or enter the code">
    Do one of the following:

    * To set up the new passkey on another device, such as your phone, open the link in the email on that device. On **Set up a new passkey**, click **Continue**.
    * To set up the new passkey on the device you're using, enter the code from the email in the **Code** field on **Check your email**, and click **Continue**. The code works only in the browser where you requested it.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Register your new passkey">
    Click **Register passkey** and confirm with your fingerprint, face, or device PIN.

    On **Name your passkey**, keep the suggested name or enter your own, and click **Save**. You can't rename a passkey later, so pick a name that tells you which device it's on.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Sign in">
    Datum returns you to the sign-in screen with the notice "New passkey added. Sign in with it below." Sign in with your new passkey.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Limits

The link and the code each work once and expire after 1 hour. Use the most recent email, and wait a while before you request another link if you've asked for several in a row.

An expired or used link shows **This link is invalid or has expired**. Click **Request a new link** to start again.

A wrong or expired code shows "That code is invalid or has expired. Check the email, or start over." Check that you used the code from the most recent email. If it has expired, click **Wrong address? Start over** and request a new link.

If you never finished creating your account, you get an email with the subject "Verify your email address for Datum" instead of a recovery email. Follow it to create your passkey.

## After you recover

Remove the passkeys from any device you lost, so no one can use them to sign in to your account. For the steps, see [Remove a passkey](/docs/platform/account/passkeys#remove-a-passkey).

## If you still can't get in

If the email doesn't arrive, or recovery doesn't work for your account, contact [support@datum.net](mailto:support@datum.net). Support can send you a recovery link. That email contains a link only, with no code, so open it on the device where you want your new passkey.

## What's next

* To add a passkey on another device as a backup, see [Manage passkeys](/docs/platform/account/passkeys).
* To sign in with your new passkey, see [Sign in](/docs/platform/account/sign-in).
